What Does a Technical Director Do?

  • An entertainment technical director (TD) manages the technical aspects of a production, such as lighting, sound, and video. They may work in theater, television, or events.

    Theater

    • Oversee the technical departments for set, lighting, costumes, props, sound, and effects
    • Ensure that technical equipment is functional, safe, and maintained
    • Manage the technical production process
    • Purchase construction materials
    • Supervise the building of scenery
    • Transport set pieces
    • Mount scenery onstage

    Television

    • Work in a production control room environment
    • Use production switchers, graphics devices, and other equipment
    • Provide input on technical designs
    • Convey complex information to technical and non-technical audiences

    Events

    • Coordinate with the production team to understand the technical requirements
    • Manage the setup and operation of audio, lighting, and video equipment
